when the motor is off the boat,,,can it hurt the engine to store it by laying it down - not on either side, but on it's 'back' where it would mount to the boat - i've heard opinions that it's bad because of how the oil would lay in the motor - but also heard that it was ok - looking for your experiences... it's a 2004 merc 9.9 remote steer motor

If it's a 4 stroke, do what the manufacturer says. Orientation is important.

If it's a 2 stroke - it doesn't matter.

the powerhead MUST be laying down raised higher than the lower unit so water does not back up into the motor. I have an old 1957' Johnson FD-11 that laid on the garage floor for 27 years and with the help of the guys here it runs just like it did in the mid 1960's with no problems from laying on it's side all those years
