Since the forums have been slowing down since the end of the boating season, I felt like showing off a bit.

My old truck finally died. I had a 2000 GMC Envoy with 192,000 miles on it. A bit over a month ago I was driving home and lost heat. No biggie I thought. The vehicle has automatic climate ontroll and rarely I've had problems with it not working correctly. Normally shutting off and re starting the truck "reboots" the microprocessor and all is good. Temp gauge read ok the whole 45min ride home, oil pressure was jittery at stop lights but nothing super abnormal, I continued to drive it.

About 1 mile from home I felt a major loss of power. Ut owe I thought, something is up. I dogged her home. Upon opening up the drivers door, I smelled it. You know that smell of hot metal, any mechanic out there knows it. It smells like death for an engine. I immediately knew what had been going on the whole ride home. Pulled the oil dipstick and the oil was boiling on it! Crap. This pony has had it's last ride. I later tried futually several cans of Barr's Stop Leak, in hopes I could get it to slow down enough to get it to a dealership to get "some" kind of trade in. As fast as I could pour water in, It would disappear into the crankcase.

So My hunt began. I had my heart set on a Chevy Colorado. Boy was I shocked by sticker prices. For a used 2007-2008 with under 30k on it I was still going to be in the low $20,000's!!!!!!! Insane for a mid size in my book, keeping in mind these aren't fully loaded. Sure there's some wiggle room in pricing but, let's be realistic. I felt I would be getting the shaft.

Several weekends earlier I had to drive to KY to help my cousin move her stuff up here to OH. We borrowed one of her old boyfriends Dodge Rams without the Hemi, and I fell in love with it. However at this junction, I really didn't need that much truck. I figured what the hell, and one night started searching on AutoTrader for Rams. Much to my surprise price was in my range.

I had found one at a local dealer, black in color, Big Horn Edition, pretty clean, had a 4.7l in it. Made an offer, and argued with the dealer. It was not a good experiance, they just wanted way too much for that one. So kept searching. I was set on the 4.7litre, I figured smaller V8=Better gas mileage. Thank god the dealer and I didn't agree on the first truck. As my search continued, I researched further, and discovered that the 5.7litre HEMI actually gets better fuel mileage due to the MDS system..... Hmmm I thought, can't be true. So I called a buddy of mine that has a 2006 with a HEMI, He confirmed with the MDS system he would average 16mpg+ and had all the power he needed to boot, with a towing capacity well over 9000#. Hell my Envoy would only average 15.5mpg with the Vortec V6 in it!

That settled it. A HEMI it is!

Searched around, found several Big Horn additions, even sat down and spoke to a few salesmen seriously, but they weren't really anything special. Nice trucks sure, but bench seats, standard radio, just basic nice trucks. when all of a sudden this truck pops up in a search query. 2007 Dodge Ram, 1500, Hemi, 22,300k miles on her, SPORT package. Sunroof, infinity sound, bucket seats, power rear sliding window, power heated seats, step bars, bedliner. Pretty much fully loaded. Price was good due to the vehicle being 3 years old it was out of factory warranty.

Went to the dealer, test drove and signed papers later that evening!!!! To boot I was able to negotiate the Chrystler certification into the deal, giving me a full engine, powertrain, and AC warranty for 80,000 miles. Now were talking. Plus I love the color.

On a funny side note, I'm sitting at the dealer ship waiting to take delivery signing the last few papers when I'm playing with the keys. I ask the salesman "whats this button do?" he says "I don't know, push it" VVVRRROOOOMMM!!!!!!! Factory remote start we didn't even know about! Love it!

So there's my new tow rig story, she's a bit dirty in these pics, as I had just pulled the boat home from my last day on the water this year, time to tuck her away for the winter(and wash the truck). I just wanted to boast a bit, my girl just rolls her eyes at my excitement, and complains she needs "climbing Gear" to get up into it!

Nope, especially the little tinny that's on the truck in the pic. Backing up the empty trailer is the tricky part. I'm good at backnig trailers, but that made me look dumb for a minute! lol

I haven't pulled the bigger boat yet, i"m not sure it'll even feel that one either.

Thats a nice truck for sure. I have an 02 with the 4.7 and love it. You lose a little towing cap with the 20 inch rims but it looks much better. I swapped my 17's off. Wanted a hemi but wasnt dead set on it. Found this one and liked everything about it. Good luck with it.

congrats on your new truck. I'm thinking about upgrading from a Tacoma to a full size. Not sure yet which one, maybe a f150 or Titan. What is the story on that 67 Impala in the second picture?

Ha ha.... good eye, good eye indeed. That was my grandfathers, he left it to my mother in his will. It's all original, minus a bad paint job, the interior is in mint condition. I don't remember the mileage on it. Hell I can't even remember what engine is in it. It's the 4 door, with the smaller engine so its not very collectible, not very desirable I mean. I've never really had a interest in that car. My father has a huge pole barn that I store the small boat in over the winter, he just happened to have it out while i was there.

They don't drive it but to the local car show, and my mom like to be taken out to get ice.cream and such in it. He's thinking of selling it, he really wants a old model A.

Were actually thinking about switching over to disc brakes, those drum brakes really suck.

Nice truck and good choice with the Hemi. They do get suprisingly good mileage. The 300C's get amazing mileage considering the size of the Hemi. The Dodge and Chrysler's are suprisingly inexpensive just a couple years old. I'd like a newer Durango since even a fully decked out Limited is cheap compared to some others but I just can't swallow that awful interior. My neighbor bought a 2010 Ram with all the upgrades and the newer interiors are fantastic. He upgraded from a 99 Ram with the old school 5.9 liter that got the worst mileage I had ever heard. I wished they'd upgraded the Durango interiors like the truck interiors. I'm impressed that you got almost 200k out of your Envoy. Was that the 4.3 Liter?

That's a nice rig!

It's funny about the gas mileage. When gas was $4/gallon I had an Expedition for sale with the 5.4. Nobody even called for a couple weeks until I added to my craigslist add that it only got 1 mpg less than the Explorers with the 4.0, and actually got better mileage while towing. The phone went crazy and I sold it 2 days later. People always assume that bigger motors mean less mileage, obviously that isn't the case.

Yes it was the 4.3 liter.

I think the thing with a smaller engine is your making it work harder to push the same size vehicle around.

Where as with the hemi for example it has more than enough torque to push the truck around using less throttle. Plus the 5speed transmission helps.

I love doing 70 on the freeway at 1800rpm, getting 17mpg, and having tire melting power in reserve if needed.

The MDS system does take some time getting used to. You can feel when it kicks on and off, varying your driving style a bit helps.

True on the smaller engine. My wife has the Buick Rainier which is the near luxury version of the Chevy Trailblazer. She has the 5.3 liter v8 but they offered a high tech inline, high hp/high torque 4.2 liter 6 cylinder as the base engine. The 5.3 is a night and day difference in power especially when towing but the mileage is nearly the same between the two engines in the same truck. Of corse we've had this similar discussion here many times regarding the 3.0 vs the 4.3 mercruiser.

That truck is just TOO DARN BIG for that boat. Can I take it off your hands, ha ha ? That is sweet and it sounds like you got it at a good price.

NIce truck, i have an 04 with a hemi non mds and i get right around 15mpg mine is 4x4 and extended cab. I love mine as well. Unloaded i head to columbus from cleveland and averaged 19.5mpg. Well good to see you wen t past the 4.7 they are common for timing chains to go bad, even if you do it yourself it expensive good luck and happy boating

Still better than my wife's 5.3 I mentioned above. She gets 14 combined with 3.73's. Towing 4000lbs barely brings it down 1mpg with the wind.

I have the 4.2 liter inline 6 cylinder in my Trailblazer. Tow our 26ft travel trailer with it. About 5,000 lb with our gear in there. Does an amazing job. Very impressed with it.

Re: Story of a new Tow Rig(long)

The modern Hemi with the Chrysler 5 speed automatic is a nice combination. I have that in my 07 Grand Cherorkee and it pulls like a freight train. I used to tow the boat with my old 98 Grand Cherokee with the 4.0 inline six. It did fine around town, but at higher speeds you felt the need for a V-8 or at least, 4.10:1 gears, LOL.
If you have the MDS system keep in mind you have to use 5W-20 oil or supposedly it won't work right. I use Mobil 1 5W-20 because that viscosity seems thin to me, but it works just fine....

When I started looking for late model Grand Cherokees I knew I wanted the Hemi but had never drove one. The first one I test drove (salesman let me go by myself) I took it out on the parkway and floored it, man what a thrill ride, like an old school musclecar....
