I think I found the problem! This won't fix the hard steering to the right issue, but it explains the loss of right rudder. This is the bolt that goes thru the center of the steering bracket and the rudder shaft. Don't know why it sheered....but it clearly did. rudder spun on the shaft about 45 deg so I had all left rudder and no right.

It could be a loose tiller arm too
That's what this meant :)

Yeah...I just can't imagine how it rotated on the rudder shaft with two bolts thru it. There are no signs that it came loose before it sheared and the nut is a nylock style. I was the last one to touch it, and I know it was tight because it was one of the hardest ones to get to. I made sure that nut was tight. The second bolt goes through the bracket and rudder shaft has a half circle cut out so the bolt "keys" the shaft. The shaft was rotated in the bracket, but I'm not sure how that can happen with the "keyed" bolt still in-place. I was alone last night and needed someone in the water to help with alignment of the bolt holes. I was also running out of day light. called the mechanic and told him it was an easy fix with two guys and he's supposed to go put it back together today sometime. Maybe he can explain how the the rudder can spin in the bracket with the bolt being keyed to the shaft. It was off by 45 deg and w/o a second person to hold the rudder, I didn't want to take that bolt loose to try and rotate it back into alignment.

Good news is that if I want to do the cable and replace the helm it's very accessible back there at the rudder. Still a little concerned as to what caused the bolt to shear in the first place. I never felt any resistance in the steering wheel....strange? Also surprised, that it's only a 1/4"-20 X 2 1/2" Bolt....they must have intended for that to be the weak link.

I have been doing a little research. It seems that my rudder shaft and tiller arm were drilled at some point. Normally the tiller arm only has one bolt and that bolt acts as a key to the rudder as well. Mine was drilled through the center and a bolt added thru the shaft. This is the bolt that sheared. Now I'm thinking that someone may have also changed the tiller arm too because the shaft should not be able to rotate in the tiller arm even with the sheared bolt. If the tiller arm isn't the right one that would explain why it spun on the shaft when the center bolt broke. Right now I have more questions than answers....but I'm up a running for the time being....still steers hard to the right when up on plane....just doesn't seem right!

Update: By communicating via facebook with guys at the Century Boat club page I was able to determine that someone switched the rudder on my boat at some point to a larger century rudder. It was not the correct rudder for the boat and since this particular rudder didn't use a woodruff key they drilled the tiller arm and rudder for a thru bolt..... So I purchased the correct new rudder from A&A Marine and all is well. Boat now steers with equal pressure in both directions.
