Straight steel prop?

Hi all! I recently bought a 5m (17ft?) 1982 Sangster with same year 115 HP Evinrude.
The prop that came with it has most of the paint gone on the blades and i can see some rust spots on them plus it's heavy as hell. Also, there seems to be a large brass ring at the exhaust. So i can buff the baldes, repaint them but not the brass ring, right?
I mean, i thought that props were aluminium or S/S, but straight steel?
It's a 13 3/8-17 by the by.

Tx, Al.

There are different grades of stainless.I think if you check it and regular piece of steel with a magnet the prop will have less affect. The brass ring won't take the paint as well as the stainless or steel.

Tx for your reply! You know what? I was thinking the same thing as i remember long time ago finding rust on a stainless part for a car. I guess if the prop is the same age as the motor, it's not doing to bad? Huummm, do you know why the brass ring?

Tx again, Al.

Re: Straight steel prop?

I purchased a used SS OMC painted prop, and took it to work, and sand blasted the rest of the paint off, to repaint it. I didnt find any brass on the flared end though. You could see it was starting to rust after just two days after, before I got to repainting it. I used a little sand paper on it, blew it off, primed it, and painted it. I think the polished SS props are of a better grade SS.

As far as the brass ring perhaps for the purpose it is easier to machine than the ss.
