Straighten Skeg???

When I put a new prop on my 1986 40 hp Evinrude, I noticed a slight bend in the skeg. It is probably bent no more than 3/16". With the prop on, I hadn't even noticed it.<br />The motor is on a 20' Weeres pontoon and I haven't noticed any steering effect from the bend. The pontoon isn't used for anything other than fishing and low speed cruising so I doubt that at the speeds we run that the bend is having much effect. <br />So, the question is, "Can I straighten the skeg without breaking the old aluminum?"<br />Maybe I should just leave things alone.<br /><br />Charles

If steering is not affected and it is not cavitating at higher rpm's, I would leave well enough alone. People have been known to heat them up and pound them straight, but there is risk involved.

I agree with angus, it probably could be fixed, butI would just leave it alone.

Ditto on the two above replies. However, should you decide to straighten that skeg, be sure to wear safety goggles. I neglected to do just that one time..... a hammer shattered and the flying bullet fast metal put four holes in the back of my left eye. A word to the wise!
