strainer in lower unit of sx drive

There is a strainer in the lower unit supply of the oil gallery. It seems to strain any large particulates that may end up in the lower unit. However, the parts manual show this part obsolete. I assume I could leave it out but any pro or cons to leaving it in. It is in good shape. Thanks
