Strange electrical issue w/ 88 40hp mariner

When I plug in controls and turn key starter does not work and wiring heats up, but does not blow fuse
something must be grounded?? model # 40 O EL serial # 420625 anyone been through this?

I also have a OD 215849 25hp American made Mariner , I need a scamtic on Ignition wiring seems to be missing parts bought these at a estate sale for cheap seems to me this one would not have much ignition parts its pull start only and tiller operated

any help would be great

Which wire. Follow the smoke to the wire on the wrong screw, along with a ground.

No smoke just gets hot and does not blow fuse strange deal. If I bypass that saftey "N" switch and hook up cable to battery it turns over automatically

Let me draw you a picture. Follow the hot wire to the fault.

it seems to be the hot wires (red) I know that

Is it the original control box or has someone splined it to engine? The Yammmerc's are wired different..

HOT to the touch.:D

Actually, if you follow the wire emitting thermal energy to it's connection point, and took a picture, I bet somebody could key off that and help.
