Just worked on my bro in laws motor for a weekend fishin trip, motor is a 1994 Evinrude 120hp. I just drained all the gas and cleaned the carbs, had major water in gas but got that taken care of. Well this weekend it was acting up,would not come up on plane, boat is 17 foot fish & ski. Went straight to carbs, drained bowls and they looked great,,so busted out the timing light, this is where it gets strange. My timing light also has a tachometer built into it,comes in handy for 2 or 4 strokes, can set for either. checked 2 cyls on port side of boat and both had spark and around 1100 rpms at idle. Checked starboard side and bottom cyl had spark and 1100 rpms ,,top cyl had good spark and 000 rpms,,checked clamp on light, moved around and worked fine on all other cyls. Ended up swapping coils on that side and still no rpms on top cyl,,yes we had brand new plugs in it. Sittin there scratching my head when it was idleing, reached up and started rapping power pack with screwdriver handle and started showing rpms, tried boat and it planed right out, would act up once in a while and it you rapped power pack it would work again,so apparently we have a bad power pack,,but is this normal that the timing light was showing spark but no rpms. also,I see that they sell power packs on I boats with 3 different models and 3 different prices,,the cheapest being the mallory,is this a quality power pack. any info much appreciated.
