Could be a night heron, or "boomer". They can make your hair (if you have any) stand on end.

Are you sure it was'nt a Barred Owl, they make alot of loud, strange calls, I remember hearing 4 or more all howling at once one night on the Roanoke east of Williamston, they sounded like a bunch of monkeys in an old Tarzan movie!

How about something a little closer to the ground - like some kind of frog maybe? Some species make awfully strange noises.
