Volvo 5.7GI-F, 2 years old, 180 hours. When the motor is running there is an intermitent squeek that I hear about 2-3 times a second. When Motor reved to 2K RPM the sound and rate increase accordingly.

I my stethescope and listed to each pully at the center.. Nothing. I followed the belt around its entire path triing to isolate its source.. Nothing. I had a friend with more mechanical experiance then me give it a look. " Thats weird, I cant pinpont the cause." With the motor off, I ran my hand in back of the belt to see if it was rubbing on something..Nothing. The belt still looks brand new with no unusuall marks. Looking at the allienment of the pullys everything looks ok.

I bought a can of belt dressing and I will give that a try to rule out the belt slipping. Any other ideas? Everything is running perfectly except for this noise. Thank you.

Re: Strange squeek from front of motor.

Were having a very similar issue with our Volvo 4.3GL-G engine. Haven't gotten around to checking it out but my first step was going to be to take the belt off and check the pulleys like bondo said. The engine has under 50 hours on it and the belt still looks brand new. Plan on putting a wrench on the auto tensioner and pulling back on the belt while the engine is running to make sure it has enough tension on it. Belt feels nice and tight though.

Re: Strange squeek from front of motor.

After taking off the belt and hand turning each pulley I was still stumped. I washed all the pulleys and the belt with Dawn, rinsed, dried, grabbed my new belt and installed. As I was putting pressure back on with the tension pulley.. Did I see the alternator bracket tilt in? Belt off and push/ pulled it forward and aft. You son of a gun. I found you. Making me look foolish. Sure enough it needed tightening. Some lock tight on the threads, and a little tighter then snug enough.

New belt on and fired her up. Score. Problem eliminated. Nice and quiet. So the final verdict: New Lock Tight on a bolt in the block cures a squeak.. LOL.. Didn't see that one coming.
