That's a 79 150 Evinrude powerhead, doesn't really change anything as far as possible solutions. OMC had some 150's with 1" carbs for a year or two, nothing wrong with them at all. While they might not allow as much top end as some other carbs they should actually have pretty good acceleration. Starting should not be harder than any other carb size, in fact may start easier.

Dhadley, thanks for the powerhead ID and carb size info. I will keep working on this issue and will let everyone know my progress. I anyone has additional theories or direction, please don't hesitate.

I'm with ezeke on this one, concerning the lack of throttle advance in the current setup that has no warm-up lever.

Binnacle controls do not have a warm up lever as such. There is a shift lock out. Either pull the handle out or push a button which by-passes the shift. Then the throttle can be advanced in neutral.

Dhadley - Agreed on advancing the binnacle mount in neutral. I'm thinking since I know the engine runs fine otherwise and I cannot yet find the startup issue that I will attempt to address it by adding a primer type system and modernize the engine a bit in the process. I already have a solenoid here and may search for carbs in town today. What do you think would be the best size for this application? I'm thinking 1 1/4". I appreciate all your help. It would be great to get out on the water this week. With a warm jacket, hat, and gloves - its damn cold in SC this week!

I will try them. It actually came with them and I switched to surface gap. Power packs changed since then so I will get a new set and put them in when I get the lower unit back on. Decided it was time for a water pump repair kit while I had the motor down.

Update - Under closer examination I found a small leak in the fuel line near the filter. I also found the choke solenoid to be weak when actuated. Installed new section of hose and new wire to solenoid. Much easier to start than before.

Installed QL77JC4 plugs after this which also seemed to improve start times. I am still thinking about adding the primer system to this motor in the future.
