Re: Strangers boarding without permission

like all things with boating, it's all about the circumstances.

Crossing rafted boats is one thing; "playing" on someone else's boat is another. Emergencies, yours or theirs, or just being helpful is something else again.

Breskin, your description of people using your catamaran brought back memories of my youthful days (and nights) coinciding with the popularity of Hobie cats, which were always left on the beach at night, providing inviting platforms for the horizontal mambo under the stars, or at least a clothes rack for skinny dipping! My apologies now extended, belatedly, to all owners of such vessels.

The sad part about trying to be a nice guy, is the consequences this day and age.

Lets say you board a boat you see taking on water. You do what you can/think is right and the boat goes down. There is a REAL good chance that if the owners finds out you were anywhere near his boat, whether helping or not, he would sue you for every penny he could.

Just the nature of what I see nowadays.

Yes, I had it happened to me a couple of weeks ago. We had tied up at the city dock and were going downtown for lunch. As we were walking up the dock I noticed a family sitting down on the bench next to the boat. A minuet later I saw them lift their child into the back seat and start taking pictures with a phone. I confronted them about it, but english didn't seem to be their first language, but they left. I had a similar experience on a motorcycle trip. We came out of a restaurant to find a woman sitting on my buddies bike with her friend taking pictures. He calmly walked up and asked for her car keys as he would like a photo in the drivers seat of a Lexus.

Over the years I have discovered that for some unknown reason recreational equipment brings out the best and rudest in people. No one ever comes up to me in a parking lot and says 'nice SUV, what year is it?" but every gas station and launch I go to with my boat, at the very least one conversation is started by a stranger to talk about my rig. I have had strangers come up to our house at the end of our cul-de-sac after seeing the boat from a distance in the driveway getting prepped to talk about it. It's not a particularly fabulous, glittery or showy boat but something in their DNA makes them drawn to equipment. I guess I do the same thing when I see an interesting or nice boat. Same kind of thing with my snowmobiles.

good thread knot

I wouldn't go hop into someone elses car, motorhome, motorcycle or home so why should we allow them to just hop in our boats without being invited ? If I ever see someone in mine, I hope they know how to swim. hahahaha

Hasn't happened to me yet, but Lord help 'em if I catch them. Heck I won't even go into my wife's purse if she asks me to. I'll take it to her and let her do it. It's her property and none of my business.

i share the same sentimate

having said that....i have boarded peoples boats twice.....both times....the boats were in serious peril....once in the inner harbour of victoria....a little cat was actually going down!...yup sinking.
i climbed aboard to try to stop it, but just ended up tying it to the dock so it could not go to the bottom....(this was on a private dock with only about 15 slips)

the other time was last summer......a boat had broken loose from its mooring in a storm, the boat was seconds from the rocks...so me and another guy boarded it and then i towed it out to a deeper mooring bouy.....wrecked my prop in the process as the waves were about 5 feet right on shore.

i consider those to be emergency situations....and real anomalys, but i had to act.

Note to LadyFish: there is not one reference here to a ditzy Blond, so just step away from the keyboard

Edit:

Holy carp!! I stand corrected . . . INCOMING . . .

LOL>>>>>why do i hear the "theme from jaws" ominously playing in the back ground !:D

Luckily I've never had that happen. Apparently it's also a big problem for motorcyclists when their bike parked some asshat will sit on it. Haven't had that one happen to me either but evidently it does happen.

We often go to a marina bar in the evening and I usually leave our cooler strapped on the swim platform. About 8 times out of 10 somebody, probably kids, empty my cooler. It doesn't really bother me though. I have a "what's mine is yours" attitude on the water, unless it's the last one.

Anchored at the beach around dusk I was talking a friend. His boat was 50 yards away (28' mid cabin). We watch 2 young girls climb into his boat and start searching through it. We walked over and as they were climbing out we asked if they found what they were looking for. They had his beers and put on the typical, "oh my god, we thought this was our boat" move. If they were adult dudes, it would have been on.

Same reaction I got when I caught two strange girls on my boat (had they been older and not stealing it may have been a good thing, lol). When they left they boarded an open bow (mine is a cuddy) about 8 feet shorter and a different color than mine..... thought it was your boat eh?? Gutsy move at a crowded bar.

Re: Strangers boarding without permission

I was snorkeling near the shore once while my boat was anchored a little further out. When I came up from air, I see a couple of kids on my boat, pulling up the anchor. I start yelling "wtf are you doing" while swimming over at top speed.

When I get a little closer, I realize they are on a completely different boat that happens to have pulled up exactly between the line of sight between me and my boat. So, as soon as my girlfriend comes up for air, I turn around and yell "There you are, wtf are you doing?" as if it were her I was yelling at all along.
