I put on some clear spray to stop the straps from squelling and slipping. It only works temporarily and everytime I take the boat out for the first start up, the straps squeel and slip.

My pulley wheels look a bit pitted and rusted in the groove. What can I do besides changing the wheels?

.

Are you talking about the belts and pulleys on the front of your engine ?

Are your belts new or old. Old belts sometimes look good but are harder than a rock. Clean the rust off your pulley(I just wrap emory cloth around my finger),but somehow. Make sure that whatever you're turning is turning freely

Yes, it's the belts and pulleys on the front of the engine.

Ok then remove belt or belts and clean the pulleys as tylerin said then install new belts.

Never, never, never spray a lubricant ob V-belts.

Or a serpentine for that matter. A belt works by friction against the pulleys. If it is squealing, it is because the belt is either loose or it is worn beyond use. The belt surface gets glazed from heat ( from slipping or wear) and gets slick. Then it squeals when you put it under a load. If you spray stuff on it, it only removes the squeal because it is lubing it. Like putting oil on a sticky bushing. That does the exact opposite of what you are trying to accomplish. As the lube works, the belts slips more, builds more heat and suffers further damage.

If the belt is serviceable, tighten it to specs and it should run silently. If not, replace it. Other factors can cause belt squeal like a misaligned pulley or bent/broken bracket but usually they are just tired. A marine environment puts an additional strain on an engine and the belts are not immune from that. Long periods of sitting take their toll on them as well.

Replace the belts- it ain't expensive or hard.
UFM82
