Re: Stratos 1850 possible rebuild?

Well, I do have some videos and a lot of pics from the last week. There were no great ceremonies other than popping open a bottle of some muscato, pouring some over the front deck and sharing it with my wife, sister and brother in law.

It sits very nice in the water.

We put on quite a few miles this last week. The E-Tec starts like a dream and runs quite well. It would only hit around 4700 RPM with a 20" prop on it, but I'm not sure if the boat mechanic adjusted the throttle completely. Through their own snafus, the motor didn't get completely installed until late Wednesday afternoon. We had already pushed our cabin reservation back one day because of the delays. With a full equipment load and 5 people, it hits 40 mph consistently.

Fishing was very slow up on Watagua. Wednesday evening, we went out trolling for lakers based on summer patterns and didn't get a thing. Thursday morning, we boated a small spotted bass 50' deep in around 150' of water. I never would have suspected that spotted bass would be that far out in open water. Friday morning, we did the same thing with a small mouth bass. 55' deep in open water.

Friday afternoon, we went out on Boone Lake to see if we could find some striper activity. Nothing to be seen there; however, we did boat a large mouth and a decent small mouth.

Saturday morning, we went back up to Watauga after doing some research on lake trout and observing where others were fishing for them. We saw them out when we pulled out on Friday. We found fish in 60 to 70 feet of water in some cuts off of the main lake. While jigging up from the bottom, you could see them go up or down to investigate our jigs on the depth finder. Couldn't trigger a strike no matter what we threw at them.

So fishing was slow as heck. I have yet to boat a fish, but that will come soon enough.

Congrats on the splash! To bad the fish weren't more accomodating. Sounds like a good time though. Boat looks good in the water. Post up the videos!

Well, the boat has been running quite well. The E-Tec has been loosening up a bit and the RPMs have improved a bit. I'll be trying out a 19" Viper here in the next week or so. It currently has a 20" Viper on it.

I can't say much about the fishing though. Right now it is Watauga Lake 7 - Poor ole John 0.

We found some fish holding the bottom in 60 to 70 feet of water in some coves. We jigged the heck out of them a few days with white, black and chartreuse Powerbait and Gulp grubs and yesterday I pulled through there with inline spinners, spoons and crank baits on the downriggers but had no luck. I should have at least tricked something into striking.

But the boat is running great.

Here are some pics that I took yesterday from Watauga.

Too bad about the fishing, but glad Pandora's Hope is doing so good. The fishing may be bad, but you have to admit we have one of the nicest mountain lakes around for a nice relaxing day of fishing. Especially when its cooler weather and all the lake traffic is gone. I Love Watauga lake in the fall.:joyous:

Honestly, even though the goal is to catch a mess of tasty fish...with views like that, I'd be totally content just drinking it all in...absolutely gorgeous looking place...
And yeah, the boat does look spiffy sitting in its natural environment!:D

On a side note. I hopped over to the hull truth today to check on some downrigger links and I had a PM waiting for me. It was from a guy who also has a Stratos 1850 CC just like mine. The overflow in the livewell is always under water just like mine is after the rebuild. He put a ping pong ball valve in his overflow line and the problem is no more.

Re: Stratos 1850 possible rebuild?

Hate to dig my thread back up, but just wanted to post a quick update and again say thanks to all that provided encouragement, advice and encouragement. I haven't been back here as of late as working 97 days straight on Pandora really took its toll and I cringe at the thought of doing another fiberglass restore.

So far everything has worked great with Pandora. I still have a lot to tidy up on her, but she runs and rides great. I was concerned about the transom not being strong enough (because I worry about things) but it has proven to be 100% rock solid. There have been times where I've accidentally put her up on plane with the motor trimmed up a bit which puts stress on things and it hasn't budged an inch. I am pleased. :)

I did have a bit of a lower issue but my dealer took care of that for me. For warranty work, Evinrude sends complete lower units which took a little longer than was expected but it is running well. Watson's Marine, who is my local Evinrude dealer has been great. They will let me try as many props as possible to find one that I'm happy with. I can't ask for much more than that.

I started with a 20" pitch Viper prop. RPMs wouldn't get above 4700 with a top speed of around 46. It would take about 6 to 8 seconds to get up on plane depending on boat load.
We swapped out the 20" with a 19" and RPMs came up just a bit more to 4800 to 4900 and the top speed dropped to about a max of 45 MPH. The difference was in coming up on plane. Loaded or not, it jumps on plane in about 2 seconds. I couldn't believe it.
There is a trim difference between the 2 props. I can over trim the 20" to blow water up and lose speed but the 19" is better behaved.
I have thought about looking at 4 blade props too. Perhaps down the road go 4 blade with an 18" pitch.

I might look into a manual jack plate (not to set the outboard back but to provide some up/down adjustment to fine tune how it runs in the water.

I also have plans to put hydraulic steering on it this spring. when I get to top RPMs and trimmed out completely, the slop in the steering makes it prone to chine walking a bit. the current steering has a good 1.2 to 2 hands of slop. You just have to be careful when you are out running top speed.

The Tohatsu kicker runs fantastically well. the day that I had the lower issue, I was about 5 or 6 miles up the lake when the problem occurred. I dropped the Tohatsu down and cruised back to the ramp at a bit over 5MPH. For deep water trolling, it can't be beat. For shallow water trolling, like for stripers, I still use my Minn Kota with auto pilot.

Here was a week ago on Boone Lake here in Northern Tn. I netted some shad easily and dropped out 6 lines. Pandora is such a stable trolling platform and the day was so calm that I was able to sit on the front deck rail and watch all of my lines with no problem. I'll be back out here on Friday I hope. The TVA is dropping Boone lake an extra 14 feet below the normal winter pool, so lake access might be interesting.

Oh yeah. you can clearly see the new windshield that I had to cut and bend after I broke the original. Don't be afraid to do it yourself. Just get a plexiglass cutter and be patient. The bending is the same way. Use a heat gun and be patient. Once the plexiglass gets hot enough, you will know and you can start the bend.
Have a Merry Christmas all!

Glad everything is working well on Pandora. I'm curious are you going to have this thread moved to the completed boat project section? I think this thread needs to be preserved for all of us to be reminded of how some persistence and hard work can pay off. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours as well. Dave...

Completed projects AND the before & after pix thread:
[h=3]URGENT New Improvements are coming to this section READ[/h]
As long as the forum is online, threads should always be preserved & accessible. It's just easier to find a specific one if it's in the Completed Boat Projects thread, BUT only if you know to look for it there......

Excellent to hear you've been USING the boat! Windshield looks great!

Thanks for posting up some post-resto & use pix, more showing the fish in the boat would be great too....

Gotta rub it in don't you. ;)

Pandora has been on the water perhaps 12 times. Other than by cast net for bait, I have yet to catch a fish in her. I'm thinking that if I buy some skis, she might come around and give me some fish catching lovin.

This thread can certainly be moved to completed projects. I'll try to snag a mod if one doesn't stumble across this.

Oops, sorry about the faux pas :tape2:

You are much more likely to land a striper USING Pandora, rather then working on her is really all I meant, and when it happens swing back thru & post the pix :watermelon:

You can PM a mod. They may ask you to trim it down via cut & paste to a new thread w/ what ever relevant title.
