Stress Crack = rotten transom?

I'm looking at a 1990 Grady-White Overnighter. The dealer sent me these pictures and I think I'm no longer considering this boat. To me the crack would mean that the transom is rotten, is that a good assumption? I can purchase the package for $6,000.

That looks like a thick gelcoat crack syndrom to me...

It could mean more on the way ..but its hard to tell without it being ground out and inspected.

How is everything else on it ? cracks around fittings or ?

I would personally get a moisture meter to it and get that price down to 4500 ;) .

YD.

The problem is that the boat is about 3 hours away from me and I haven't actually seen it yet. The dealer is selling it for the owner. The dealer says he wouldn't worry about the cracks (cause he's not the one buying it) but I'm not gonna take his word for it! He seems to be pretty honest though, says the trailer is hammered, much worst in person then what the pics show. Here are some more pics of the transom and the rest of the boat.

$6000 for a 21 year old boat............ stop being so cheap and drive the three hours to see it and inspect it in person. I doubt anyone here will go out on a limb and commit to anything based on a photo. It's your wallet do what you feel is right.

I would make the drive first.

Why am I being cheap??? I haven't gone to see the boat yet because the dealership closes at 5pm, which is when I get out of work. I am driving to see it on Saturday, not sure why I'm explaining myself though... I asked for friendly ADVICE, which I thought this forum was for. I never asked anyone to put their reputation on the line, and I'm not sure why anyone would. I have learned a ridiculous amount of information on this site from questions just like this. $6,000 for a 21 year old boat may not be bad, but I don't want to have to throw another 6 into her just to get her on the water. If that's being cheap, then I guess I'm guilty.

My bad. I misunderstood. I thought you did not want to drive to see it.

I would be armed with enough tools to fully inspect the inside of the transom and any stringer I could access. I really am saying be picky and be cautious so you will not have to spend an additional 6K. See what kind of written maintenance records you can get too.

Dont get me wrong its a nice boat but for 6,000 I would think 6,000$ would buy a nicer rigg than that (trailer included). If it was me, Id keep looking.

Looks ridden hard and put away wet. For a long time. I would offer 4K and let it stand, just looking at the pictures, you can tell it has been neglected at some point. Trailer probably needs a bit of work too.

Thanks for the advice guys! I posted this same thread on greatgrady.com too, and the overall opinion in both is to run from her. I guess the search continues!
