Well I was going for a test ride and everything was perfect.I was feeling like things were going great.I stopped out on the lake and shut the motor down to check the stainer for weeds. When I went to start back up just a "click".Thank goodness I got a tow back because my single oar was not getting me back very soon!Well anyway took my jumper box to the boat and still just a click. The next day brought fully charged battery still CLICK! I used a screwdriver to bypass celleniod still CLICK!Removed starter and they are going to test it on the bench for me.Am I on the right track?Wires were clean everywere.

Sure hope you checked your battery cables to make sure they were clean and tight. Especially the ground cable where it attaches to the block. If it's bad, new batteries, tight battery cables on the battery, new starter, and it will still just click.

Pull the plugs and see if you can turn the motor by wrench. If the starter is not off yet give the key a try with plugs out.Charlie

Re: STRESSED OUT A LITTLE !!!

HEY GUYS Thanks for all the replies. Before I took the starter off I made sure it wasn't a bad ground or corrosion, ect. The bench test showed the starter was bad.I shopped around and found the best deal for me was 225. WHEW!!! (Hope the wife doesn't find out).Anyway I put it on and it started.Although this old boat has cost me some Jack and taken up much of my time I have to say I have learned a great deal about boats and boating.I told my wife that the experience that I'm getting with this old boat is PRICELESS! Well there is actually a price here, but you all know what I mean.LOL

Everytime my old boat needs a repair I try to tell myself the same thing. It's a learning experience. Unfortunately the most important lesson I am learning is that I wish I could afford a new boat

In a jam or just as a quick diagnostic measure a healthy tap on the starter housing with a hammer or pry bar if you cant get your hammer down there will make a starter work at least once or twice. It is pretty rare when it doesnt work for me anyway.

Re: STRESSED OUT A LITTLE !!!

Just come home from another ride this morning. That boat of mine starts so much better with the new starter.I thought everything was great before but I can see improvement. Before starters go bad do they sometimes start to lose a little cranking power? Thanks for all the help guys.

Re: STRESSED OUT A LITTLE !!!

The simple answer is yes, they can draw a higher current when the starter is in poor condition.
