I think you are talking about the thrust washer. OMC 310648. It's beveled and about 3 and half inches across? About an inch wide bevel?

I have never greased mine but I once tried to seal around the outside of it real good with Form-A-Gasket to see if that helped form a vacuum getting water up out of the lower and into the upper. It made sense, but so does greasing it real good if you ask me. I just dont know the correct answer.

What I think it does, and I could be totally wrong is just prevents grinding of metal on metal in a hard thrust between the upper and lower units taking away some damage that might be caused by twisting in a large thrust of power.

But what do I know, I have been chasing this one issue with nearly ten thousand dollars for over two and a half years and know that whole outdrive nut for nut and can't whip what I am dealing with.

No, I'm familiar with the thrust washer. I ordered a new one before I cleaned up the old one only to discover it was coated in permatex. Had I cleaned it up beforehand, I could have saved a couple of bucks. Now I have a spare.

What I was asking about is whether I should have greased down inside the swivel housing sleeve itself below where the thrust washer sits if the sleeve gasket and the rubber seal rings are brand new. The manual didn't reference greasing it though I understand it's a means of sealing out exhaust gases if there is a leak.

Oh I think I got ya now...I clipped a pic and drew an arrow to an older swivel housing...

I gooped it all down in there, myself really heavy.

And then I shot it about ten times again with a grease gun once together...I would think this has to be heavily greased to seal right.

Interesting. Mine being an older outdrive is slightly different from yours. At the point of the arrow, below the rubber seal, on mine there is a 1"x6"x1/8" thick (thereabouts) band of gasket like material that lines the inner surface. The upper unit slips very tightly down into the opening. It's really quite snug. Is your missing that band or can I not see it on your pic? If it supposed to be there, it slips in and rests on that ridge that runs around the inner circle and presumably seals snugly against the mail component of the upper unit. Not sure in that instance if grease is required.

Ok I learned a lesson from the school of hard knocks.
First use the clear hose and see if your getting exhaust gasses in the cooling water. If it bubbles then give the swivel bearing a couple of shots and check,if the bubbles are gone then the swivel bearing seals are leaking.
If no bubbles just give the a shot or two to grease the bearing.
Don't do what DUMBASS me did !!!! I replaced my hydroshift with a rebuilt mechanical shift converson. Worked great ,very smooth shift. At the end of the season I pulled the plugs out to change the gear lube out. The lower had goo come out of it chunky `goo. I thought it was a reaction from the syn. lube I used, WRONG! When I replaced it I gave it 12 shot of grease and blew
the pinion drive shaft seals out. Now all I have is water in my lower unit.
Pulling boat out tomorrow, seals ordered, fun begins.Live and learn.
The reason the bubbles come is the pump will suck gasses passed the leaky seals easeier then suck water causing over heating . This happened to me.
Now mine runs at 160*all the time including WOT.
Good Luck!

I completely agree on the clear tubing. That was the first thing I did when I resinstalled my outdrive. I wanted to SEE that my work was not for naught. When the tubes are clear, it's a solid clear stream of water. A good feeling for sure. It's an excellent and inexpensive way of keeping tabs on the water pump!
