Tried to raise my outdrive and it wouldnt raise , seems the first 2 teeth and 7 and 8 tooth are worn down so its bouncing on the 7-8 tooth, rest of the gear is great, any idea why these teeth wore out? Got 2 used quadrants on their way.

I have no clue as to why the quadrant teeth are worn. Maybe someone else has heard of it. My quadrant gear is now 34 years old and in perfect condition.

What does the tilt drive gear look like? The drive gear is steel (I'm sure) and the quadrant is a softer bronze like material, but heck those teeth are so big and the leg moves pretty slow so I sure do not see how the drive gear could eat them.

Are the teeth worn evenly across. If not, I would suspect bent trunions on the intermediate housing.

Tks for reply Boomyal, I never really examined the quadrant, it work and all was good, maybe they were just working and thats all. the trunions look good so not sure, question you say your drive goes up very slow, mine moves very fast up and down, are they slow to tilt normally. Maybe theres something goin on in the clutch pack that brings it up faster than normal???? Teeth on the drive gear look good and deep by the way.
tks

Well is should have said relatively slow. It is not high speed, generating a lot of heat and wear. Mine does move up slower than it goes down but I would not say it dawdles.

Maybe your quadrant was a defective, porous casting? But I would check to see if the teeth are worn straight across.

Re: Stringer 800 tilt quadrant missing teeth.

Is this a saltwater rig? If so, it looks like corrosion/electrolysis started it and mechanical wear finished off. That's my only guess. Slap on a new one and keep an eye on it.

A hint on removing the quadrant bolts, ESPECIALLY if this was a salt water rig. The bolts do not have the easiest access. I think an offset box wrench is the best choice. Try to loosen them but DO NOT force them. If you get any movement but then resistance, apply penetrating oil and tighten them back down. Keep rocking them back and forth, applying penetrating oil each time (and I do not mean WD40) If after several cycles you do not seem to make progress, use a propane torch to heat the area just short of burning/blistering the paint. Then repeat the steps above.

Once out, clean the bolt threads on a wire wheel and chase the holes with a tap. Use brakekleen to blow them out, then apply judicious quantities of Marine grease (full length) on re-installation. The very last thing you want to do is snap one of those bolts.

Even if they seem to come out with minimal effort, back them out a bit, then run them back in to clear the threads. Aluminum is relatively soft and all that detritus, jammed in the bolt threads can distort the threaded holes.
