Ok I ahve my boat gutted down to just stringers and the rotten transom> the top is hoisted up. How can i get the transom out its fiberglassed by layers even between the two pieces of wood and resin between the hgull and wood. Its not coming out easy , wil take a few hours and tricks i shoud know besides a big wood chisel and hack for ever? Also when i redo the stingers should i gusset from the frames to the hull like shown and also change the design a little bit. On the old design on the right it had the frames just laying in the notches to the stringers. In mine i would have them done like that but also plywood gusseted to them to the hull. Also I changed the stringer layout, does this seem acceptable??

Re: stringer and transom installation

jsmart,
Many of the people have used a saw and set the depth so you don't cut into the hull. They cut it into a grid pattern. Still takes elbow grease and a big hammer. Some others have used electric chainsaws.
Mine was a lot simpler to remove but it was really rotten.
Good luck

Re: stringer and transom installation

Thanks bob i actually had that idea but before doing it i wanted to ask. good thing was mine was rotted on the bottom so that was coming out good. I did run the grinder over the fiberglass in a grid style fashion and tore out the rotted wood. Well what do you think of the picture i attached with the new stringer layout?

Re: stringer and transom installation

The new design is clearly stronger than the old one. Any added support in addition to the factory layout will make it stronger. The trick is to be conscience of the added weight. Was the factory stringer setup weak?

What system are you going to use to replace the transom?
That will determine how you take the old one out. If you are planning to skin the transom back in place and replace the inner skin. Then the easiest way to get out is the cut a grid into the wood and knock it out in pieces.

Re: stringer and transom installation

tahnks drewpster, Do you think i need to leave the one stringer as show all the way to the front or 2 About 6 inches off center rom the middle of the hull running the entire way .As far as the transom, I swore someone said that would be fun it isnt lol. Well i HAve doen the easier side today but even being just wet and semi rotted was still no fun.
