OK, explain to me again how bedding stringers in peanut butter is different from bonding stringers to the hull? Seems to me it is the same thing....just thicker glue. Shouldn't the stringers be sitting on something more pliable to prevent hard contact?

Ok, disregard this. I found an excellent answer to this question posted by erikgreen.

Sorry I must be talking to myself again. (and answering....scary)

Re: Stringer contact and Hard spots

The problem with cutting a stringer to fit the hull is that there is no way to get it to fully contact the surface for it's entire length and that's where the problem is. What you end up with is small areas of contact and then larger areas with no support that may flex, the small contact points create hard spots. Bedding the stringer in putty (peanut butter) allows for full contact over its entire length lessening the chance of a single hard spot. Using foam or something flexible like adhesive does just the opposite by holding the stringer entirely off the hull. Not using these methods doesn't mean there will be a problem and its probably over played for small boats, but its a good practice.
