Dumb thought but has any one considered using any of the newer composite lumber, made from recycled plastics in say stringer repair.I saw a show on this stuff and they claimed it was as strong as comparible lumber and water prof.I e-mailed a couple of companies that make this stuff and they said that epoxy would stick to it and rot and water wouldn't effect it.They said it was being used for boat docks now with great sucess.I looked at some composite lumber at a local lumber yard and it did look strong to me.
Anybody got any thoughts on this stuff.

Re: Stringer material

it's not intended to be used as stand alone lumber.. it's not for structure.. it's way to soft...

it's only to be used as plankin' for decks an such with supports on 16 in.centers..

Re: Stringer material

I was considering this very same thing for stringer replacement. I have been reading up on its properties and the following web site, http://www.compositetimbers.com/products.html, states that it is strong enough for stringers, joists, beams, and columns. My only concern is whether or not it will be compatible with resins and fiberglass. It would appear to be a good choice if it is in that it would do away with mold and rot. Any ideas on this?

Re: Stringer material

hey crab I was under the inpression that the wood in stringers was only a "core" material.and that the fiberglass/resin and its shape is what gave them their strength?

Ayuh,.....

I haven't seen Crabbait in a Long, Long time......

That composite lumber, Still doesn't have the lateral strength to be Stringers....

I prefer 3/4" Plywood......

Btw,....

Re: Stringer material

what about people liek me whose stringers are like 2" thick? I think i twould be a pain to cut all that ply and glue it and laminate it etc etc....I was thinkign of maybe using White Oak for my stringers? I would prefer to use a single long piece of lumber for each stringer.

Re: Stringer material

Sorry about replying to an old post, but I did not want to start a new thread on something that was already started. The original post was dated in '02 and there probably have been advances in the technology of this product. I have emailed the manufacturer of the product, posted in my original response to see what their thoughts are on this. They claim it is as strong if not stronger then wood. Still concerned about compatiblility with resins.
