stringer? or not?

I'm new to boating, and certainly new to repairing boats (although MUCH more experienced since I bought it in July!). My "winter" project is a spot in the floor where all the wood has rotted out, not the floor (plywood), but the cross section under it that supports the floor. I don't have a picture, but here is the scenario maybe someone can point me in the right direction. Between the capitan's chair and the passenger chair about amidship, there is a removable bait box(?) in the floor with a cover. On either side there is wood that crosses the bilge area to hold this in place that is rotted out. It's about 22" wide and about 9" deep (from floor to bilge). Is that considered a "stringer"? I'm trying to find out where to start looking at a plan for replacing this. As a temporary measure during the summer, I put some plywood right next to the rotted out portion to support the floor and keep it from causing more damage and that seemed to work, but need to replace the rotten parts over the winter months.

Re: stringer? or not?

From what I have learned about boat construction the "stringers" run along the hull stern to bow. These are very important in that they keep the hull from twisting or warping out of shape. The cross supports are generally there to provide for design features (such as floors or bait boxes) but some (depends on the length of the boat as to how many) also are there as structural support to the stringers.
