Re: Stringer Question

Well I cut a square opening in the storage area to see exactly how i left these stringers. We only shorted these stringers by about 1 ft. Theres also still a bit of water in there (I finally figured out and fixed the slow leak this summer). Interestingly, the centerline stringer ends about 2 feet from the front of the boat (original construction).

Theres what looks like some mold on the hull and there is a bit of a foul odor. Should I pour something in there to kill this mold?? Bleach? Antifreeze??

Id like to add an access hatch to thie storage area after this repair, so that I can get air into the subfloor area if water happens to get in there again (water is gotten in there since the boat was new, but I believe I have now fixed this issue). Are such hinged access panels available??

Thanks.

mould on the hull?...odor?? oh oh
under the floor???

do a core sample of the rest of the foam (farther back) if it is under the floor.
get it all before you close it up!

good luck

Yes, the area I opened is under the floor, but in the area that I never reconditioned. This boat does not have foam (sounds like this isnt good). Should I pour lots of antifreeze in there (like a gallon +) and let it soak for the winter???

The big mystery with this boat is that it seems to have a mystery slow leak that cannot be fixed easily (has existed since brand new). I finally found that the less than textbook patch I put on to repair hull damage from the floor replacement in 1997, was leaking. So I THINK I have it nixed this time, but I sure wont hold my breath.

Re: Stringer Question

Would something like this work?

http://www.iboats.com/Seadog_Watert...d.257653--list_time.1196125483--view_id.39787

How big is the hole you cut? Could you cut it out to 6" diameter?

Thanks, that looks perfect. How do I seal around the mounted frame or does this come with an o ring for this as well???

I cut a haphazard rectangular hole, but Ill have to repair the deck in this area anyways (This area is under the covered bow - storage area, wood is like 1/4" here).

Re: Stringer Question

Keep in mind that anti freeze will soak into and swell wood. (it's an established remedy for loose hammer handles). I'm not 100% sure it kills rot fungus, but chlorine bleach does.

Re: Stringer Question

Now that you mention that the stringers are 2x4's with the wide part against the hull that changes things somewhat. Having the stringer oriented in that manner is not nearly as strong as if they were associated vertically,(narrow side against the hull). That being said, the hull design is based on the stringers oriented with the wide part down, which means that the loads they are designed to carry are not as great as if they were associated vertically. Does the missing 2 feet really matter, not sure, but it definitely matters less than if the stringers were oriented vertically, because the loads that they carry are not as great. If you still want to repair it, the best way to join the new piece is with a scarf joint. In this case I would grind about a 4 inch taper onto the end of the existing stringer, and do the same with the new piece. Then bed the new piece to the hull and existing stringer with peanut butter, and glass it in, overlapping about 12 inches onto the existing stringer. Then re-install the new section and you are good to go.

If you fix your water leak the foam idea may work also, as may leaving it` but don't know for sure. Just a few things to consider.

Have a great day

Re: Stringer Question

Actually, I only shorted those stringers by 1 foot, and not 2 (my memory exaggerated it). I will repair it though.

Do you mean I should consider adding foam??

Re: Stringer Question

Personally, if it was my boat, I would probably just leave it. One foot is not that much, especially with the stringer oriented in the manner which it is, but then again I have not seen the boat. Keep an eye on it for cracks or any other signs of failure.

Have a great day,

Re: Stringer Question

OK, old post, but thought Id add onto it. So, I havea 12" x 6" hole cut out of the deck up in the storage area. Now that the area below has long since dried out (and leak fixed), I want to patch the cut out. I figured I could cut a 2' x 2' hole and glass in a new piece of plywood. Will this work OK? (note that this area of deck lies about one foot above the top of the stringers).

Also, I purchased the PL strtuctural adhesive to bond a length of 2x4 to the stringers. Can I use this adhesive to fill the gap around the new plywood prior to glassing in??

Thanks.
