hey guys got one question i replaced the wooden stringers on a boat i am currently restoring and i bedded the stringers with west system epoxy and glassed the sides is this an acceptable method of bedding the stringers as i have read on the forum to use construction glue. the old stringers sat right on the hull with only the sides glassed over

Re: stringer question

Epoxy is fine, and is the accepted method for attaching the stringers. Most people use a putty made of epoxy or poly resin and a filler powder to bed the stringers and to form a fillet that the glass can follow when applied.

The construction adhesive use is a relatively new thing that people are trying out here - check out some threads about it to see how well it works, problems, etc. It's definitely a good tool to have in the toolbox, but it may not be right for everything.

Show us some pictures of your boat :)

Re: stringer question

I personally would not use the construction glue. Bed them with peanut butter (epoxy and filler), that is the tried and proven method.

Have a greart day,

Re: stringer question

It makes little difference what you use, what you're trying to do is keep the stringer from only contacting the hull in a few places. The putty gives it continuous contact, the glue keeps it off the hull completely, if the stringer contacts the hull in only a few places it "may" be forced to flex around these hard spots and crack. Many small boat builders don't use anything under the stringers.
