Im looking to replace the stringers on my 16ft saftmate. What glass should be used for this? I will be using epoxy resin.

What is the best way to remove the stringers? Id like to remove the center one intact because it is somthing like a tapered 2 x 6, so that I can use as a template...

Thanks.

Re: Stringer Questions

use the search for stringer replacement. The only problem is youll have TOO much information. It makes it hard to choose a method. But I will giv you what I am doing,

using 3/4" exterior ply dried and coated w epoxy the bedded with pl adhesive. then tabbing with 8.5oz cloth to hold in place. Then once that starts to kick I am going to use the same oz cloth tape to do a full length tab with another layer overlapping this. After that starts to kick I intend on laying a full overlapping layer of 1708 over the whole stinger. I will see how this tacks up as to whether I use another layer of 1708 or not.

Hope that helps. Just pick a method that is tried and true and prep correctly, then do it. Dont stew too long on trying to decide. it will take you forever if you are like me to make up your mind. Go with your gut and get r done!

Re: Stringer Questions

Im a bit confused by your terminology. Could you clarify?

How would the OEM have glassed these in originally? Im looking at one of the stringers, and it outer layer is mat, but the layers is quite thick and woving is visible, at least in some areas. Could they have used mat, then woving over the whole thing, then mat over the whole thing?

Thanks.

mat-woving-mat would be the way to go (thats how we do it at work), with epoxy you'll be laughing.

Re: Stringer Questions

doing mat roving mat with epoxy wouldnt make me laugh, it would make me cry! Youd have 1000$ in epoxy alone. wiggler is talking about using poly resin which needs mat before each layer of cloth or roving. If using epoxy you dont need the mat. The epoxy is strong enough of a glue to stick without needing the small strands of CSM(chopped strand mat). So if using epoxy you really have a lot of options as the what type of cloth you use, but the rule of thumb is, you need to replace what you take out. So if you have a thick woven cloth from the factory like me then you would want to measure the thickness of that then uses layers of whatever product you want to get back to that thickness. Be sure to add in the thickness that the epoxy itself will make up. 1708 is a product that www.uscomposites.com sells and it is said to be very easy to work with and provides good build up of thickness and strength due to the angles at which the individual layers are laid to one another. It is a superior product to woven roving. You may just need one layer, or you may need three. Only you know that. I hope that make it more clear. If there is anything that isnt please ask. Here to help, like others have helped me.
