Hello,

I'm new to the group and need some advise. I working on a 21' fiberform baja and need to replace the stringers. One side is totally rotted away, other side is 50% gone. Original stringers are 1 1/2"x 11 1/2" x 17' douglas fir with tight knots. I have aquired 2" x 14" x 19' clear spanish cedar
Will this work as a replacement?

Please help,
Luke

you will have to fit it to the hull, and the get the height down to 11 1/2 for it to work right. fit the hull first, then you can use a chalk line to mark the top for proper height. you could have use 2 layers of doug fir 3/4 plywood, laping the joints at 4 feet, fit then glue laninate.

I would use exterior grade Doug Fir plywood. Cut 8 foot lengths, 12 inches tall, laminate then cut to size. As TD said, overlap your joint at 4' intervals. I am unsure what Spanish Cedar is, but West Coast Cedar is not that strong plus it does have some oils in it and unsure how well poly resin will stick to it. Epoxy may stick better, but do not know. You can also use pressure treated ply, just make sure it is DRY before you start. I let mine dry for 6 weeks indoors prior to installing it.

Good luck and have a great day.

i really don't recommend the pressure treated as there still is a problem with fasteners corroding, because of the chemicals, used to treat the wood.

TD is right with fasteners corroding, I believe it is especially a problem with ACQ treatment. I believe it is less of a problem with CCA, however it is being phased out in favor of ACQ. If you can find CCA treated ply and use Stainless fasteners you should be OK. That is what I used for my stringers.

Have a great day,

Rob.
