Stringer shift cable

1985 Ebbtide, 305ci, OMC Stringer mechanical shift. I'm having trouble with shifting my OMC outdrive and am getting ready to replace the cable. I understand the shift cable part # is 982563 and was wondering if any other cables might apply or was there a later number for this cable - ie. a replacement. Any suggestions on completing this replacement is appreciated. Thanks.

Does anyone know if OMC has a parts chart to see if the shift cable described above has any other interchangeable parts?

Go HERE ... select parts, then Stern Drive and find yours in the drop down.

no. OMC went out of business 15 years ago. Bombardier is selling parts through Evinrude dealers, but they aren't putting tons of effort into it.

sometimes the parts lookup at marineengine.com spits out a decent list of chronological changeups of a part number.
