ok guys moving along great in my restoration of my 1967 larson all american. but yet another "?" has come about im kinda not sure on.. i live in SWPA called 2 local lumber yards to find stringers in solid timber planks like the ones i pulled out(saturated pieces of dirt/wood as the old stringers)would be near impossible to get..THe west coast isnt doing to well with wood is what i was told from the lumber yards. lol but the stringers are 10'Lx11"wx3/4" thick.. i was going to use douglas fir timbers...
here is a pic of the stringer setup...these pics were posted on here by somebody else and this ISN'T my boat. but its just to show you how they are setup in my boat. you can see wheree the stringers are at encased in glass...

now for my "?" if i can't locate these planks i need.. i can get 10"w planks at lowes around here...can i cut 2 planks down to equal the size i need per stringer... my planks originally are 11" wide so for one stringer side i would have two 6.5" planks butted next to each other then encased in glass.. its kinda hard for me to explain but i hope someone understands this and may have a response..like everyone else i want to improve from the factory not make worse lol if anyone has a better idea that sounds more logical than mine im open to all suggestions. thanks a lot guys.

Re: stringer sizing

On my 20 ft fiberglass bowrider the three stringers in the middle where 2x4s and did not come up far enough to touch the bottom of the deck. The stringers will have to be about 16" to 18" tall to contact the deck. I did not notice any soft spots before but I think it is better to have the support.

I think I am going to do like Bondo said and use plywood. I believe plywood is stronger than plank lumber, unless it gets wet.

Re: stringer sizing

use 3/4 inch ply laminated, they are 10 feet long, do it like this

8feet 2 feet
_______________________________ ____________
___________ ________________________________
2 feet 8feet

you can bevel the bottom to fit the hull. they can be any width you want.
one sheet of 3/4 ply will do both stringer. glue and screw them together, and glass them in. it will be stronger than original.

2 pieces together, so you will have a 1 1/2 inch thick stringer. you can use exterior, ply to save some money, and glass it in very well. just grind the existing glass on one side of the slot so it will fit in.

Re: stringer sizing

I would do stringers in one layer of 3/4" ply and still consider it overkill on a 20' boat. 3/4" ply is stronger than the 2x4 type plank lumber they originally used. But you can also compare high end 300hp 25' center console deep vees and see them use only 1/2" ply for their main stringers and bulkheads.
