I think I have a pretty good handle on the process of spiling and installing frames and stringers, but it occurs to me that I don't know the preferred technique for leveling the top of them prior to setting the floor on them. I have built, restored, and repaired wooden boats for 25 years and I can come up with something, but I imagine there is probably a more straightforward process than what I'm thinking. How do you set the tops of floors & stringers?

Re: Stringer Tops

Hopefully you marked the sides of the hull where the previous deck attached. If so, then, stringline from side to side will give you the height. I use cardboard and trace the outline of the hull onto it using a school house compass. Or you can take measurements from the string to the hull every 6" and transfer these to the plywood stringer to get the bottom contour.

Thanks.

Why set the stringers on dowel spacers instead of directly on the hull?

Re: Stringer Tops

It will cause hard spots on the hull and create cracks in the gel coat and glass ;)
