I've got an 83 Stringer and I'm trying to get the bearing housing out of the upper drive unit - it seems to be stuck. I finally got the water pump and pump shaft out and I've tried using a rod through the steering post to tap on the bearing drive shaft but have not been successful yet.

What other tricks can I try?

Thanks

Did you get the impeller housing out too? Mine was pretty glued in there from corrosion, so I had to use some persuasion, but it came out ok. I took some pictures when I did my waterpump:

Be careful of the shims at the bottom of the bearing housing. If they get damaged they'll need to be replaced & you'll need a special tool to measure gaps to determine which shims you'll need.

Note that the blue plastic plugs in this picture cover holes you can use a pulley extractor tool on to pull the housing out, not sure if all housings had this:

I was able to persuade the impeller housing out so I'm past the plastic plugs. But I need to get to the seals on the drive shaft. I'll watch for the shims.

Wasn't sure what size hammer to use for those "taps" either! :D

I'll give it another try.

Thanks

Some PB Blaster down the sides just in case and a few more strong love taps and it slid out.

Thanks for the help.
