Now I know why the boat was cheep. 1979 Bayliner with 898/305 stern drive. So while trying to work the Idiot out of the boat I found the head on the stern side hinge bolt is striped on the bell Housing.I’m sure this has been talked about in other posts but I can’t find them. What’s the best plan of attack?

I have no idea what you are talking about or where on the engine/drive system. But not seeing what you are dealing with, is there anyway to install a helicoil? That usually is a workable option. JMHO!

I think he is referring to the torx head hinge bolt having the torx socket area stripped out. Only way I can think to go after that is take it to a welder and have them weld a nut to the end of the bolt. The heat will also break loose any corrosion or thread lock on it.

Sorry for not being clear. I appreciate your response. Yes the Torx head hinge bolts. Some one had even gone so far as to grind down the head of the bolt some how.Making it deep into the hole. I was able to slip a thin blade in between the bell Housing and the gimbal ring and slowly cut the bolt in half. Amazingly with no damage. Hopefully someone still makes replacement bushing. There is play in the gimbal ring. Not sure how much is excessive is.

The washer is still available. Same as Alpha drives. The manual also gives specs as to how much play. You can read the manuals at boatinfo.no
