Stripped head on Pivot Pin

I just pick up a 56 Johnson 30 hp and am resealing the lower unit.

The pivot pin head was stripped. Prior owner sealed around it with some type of calk, but looks like
he was not able to remove and damaged it.

I sprayed it with pBlaster let is soak and put some heat to it.
I tried to use a drill back-out tool and no such luck.

I'm afraid to do much else with it for fear of mucking it up more.
If I drill the head off to remove it, can you get a vice grip on the shaft from the underside to get the threaded end undone?

Appreciate any help.

Re: Stripped head on Pivot Pin

If you could post some pictures of your pivot pin problem, I and others could give some directions and/or suggestions to help you out. Not knowing exactly what you are dealing with, it is hard to make any educated suggestions for your problem... Usually cutting off a stuck screw or bolt head allows the disassembly of the item and then, yes, a vice grip can assist in the bolt removal. But I can't say that for your situation not seeing it.

Re: Stripped head on Pivot Pin

Are you trying to remove it so you can get inside the gearcase for repairs, or what? Is it leaking around the pin? OK, from what little we know about the situation, lets just say that people often muck up the Phillips head, but an impact screwdriver will often get it out if there is any of the Phillips left at all. If it is rounded out, a left-hand drill bit will often back it out. It sounds like you have already tried something similar to that.

The threads of the pin are not exposed to water, since they are on the oil side of the gasket. Therefor, the threads should not be seized. BUT, if the gearcase was full of water, and the pin did seize, you have more problems than just the pin.

The pin goes through the shifter fork on the inside. Nothing is exposed outside except that Phillips head. Access from the inside is kind of restricted by close quarters and the fork. But yes, the skeg and all the innards will come off without getting the pin out, as long as the shift rod connector is undone. It would be extremely difficult to reassemble it though, without getting the pin out.

Having trouble with photo upload for some reason.

I am resealing the lower unit. Pin did not have a gasket--just a white sealant of some sort.
Ball bearing on prop shaft is also shot. The seal and housing just before the prop is also gerry crafted with some sealant.
Just trying to make things right. Gears all look OK. Oil came out nice and black. No signs of water intrusion.

Per F_R, I was able to disconnect the skeg via the fork and shift rod. (I'm still a bit of a rookie on these things.)
Should be able to grab the pin with a needle nose vise grips Little things that slow you down. Man!
Thanks

You should be able to do it from inside like you plan. The gasket, is a small black o ring. You will see it once you back the Phillips screw out. Ensure you use a new one when resealing.
