I need to repair a stripped spark plug thread. Has anyone use the Time-Sert inserts. They appear to be more solid than HeliCoil.

I'd prefer not to remove the head, but if that's the only option, so be it.

Re: Stripped Spark Plug Threads

Ive never used that system to retap threads,,but i will give you my own opinion in this anyway..

in my I/o I ALWAYS took the head off when i ran into that issue,,but it olny happend twice for me.. I'm not a fan of any metal dropping going into the engine..so I will always took it off.

some may tell you its ok to do in place, but ill let them tell you..

On my V4 outboard I do them in place becasue they are vertical in position..

Good luck!

I frankly never had good luck with any plug thread insert, and unless its rare and valuable, i just replace the head anymore. And inserts are GREAT for interfearing with the heat travel of the plug.

Time sert boast the "over the fender" application whihc says you do not have to remove the head...

i imagine you still have to drill out to fit...so I stand with my original call of taking the head off...but its up to you..the product says it can be used that way..

Re: Stripped Spark Plug Threads

I used a time-sert kit to repair a blown out sparkplug on my FORD truck. When it blew it completely striped out the threads.
I could not be more impressed with how well it worked. Definitely a permanent repair!!! You don't have to remove the head, use grease on the tools to hold the shaveings.
Down side is the kit can be expensive.
Highly recommended
