stripping aluminum...

Ok, my first question is...

I did something rather stupid last summer to my aluminum boat. I was cleaning it with aluminex. ( I was trying to get liner off the floor of the hull) So I poured it on full strength. It dissolved it but it also turned the aluminum white. Did I ruin my boat? Is it going to keep corroding now?

next. I have another aluminum boat that I am about to strip the paint off from. I bought some paint stripper from lowes. It says it is for metal. Will this be safe on aluminum? Some told me it would not. Then I told them it was for a boat and he said well then it would b/c aluminum on a boat is different. So am I safe?

WHY do you want to Remove All the Paint,..??..??...

If the Paint that's there Isn't peeling Off,.... sand it smooth,+ repaint over it,.... You'll save yourself a Ton of Time,+ Money.......

No,... It'll be Fine.......

As for your aluminum, try some baking soda and water and wash the stain to make sure you have nuetralize any chemical reactions. You might also request an MSDS sheet where you bought the product. After nuetral try a scratch pad and see how deep the whit stain is, it may be a surface stain that will buff out. Either way its not expensive and is worth a try.

I'm sandblasting my jon boat. I'll be using fine sand and won't focus on one area for very long. Shouldn't pit the metal if done correctly.

Unless you want to paint over all your aluminum I would sand blast as a last resort.

Re: stripping aluminum...

If you are going to try this then think about media blasting instead. In stead of sand or steel beed, you use plastic or walnut shells. It is less intrusive on the metal or glass.

Re: stripping aluminum...

I think I would be better off just stripping. I am going to put a uv bed liner on the inside. and paint the outside. The outside is not peeling so I am just going to sand and repaint it. Thats all I have to do right? Do I have to re apply primer?

Fine sand the out side and prime, then paint.

well actually the outside paint is peeling. I think I am just going to strip the whole thing. So Ill strip the whole thing. I am only going to paint the outside top part and stop at the water line rib. Then I am thinking about just polishing the rest to a chrome like finish. But that will take a lot of sanding. What should I do? Can you paint aluminum and make it look like a auto paint job? If you can I just might paint the whole outside. So anyway after stripping the outside what prep work do I need to do before I repaint it. And what is the best paint to use?

<q>Then I am thinking about just polishing the rest to a chrome like finish. But that will take a lot of sanding<q>

A LOT OF SANDING AND POLISHING!!!! Plus, once it gets wet, that polish job is shot. If you decide to paint, you'll need to use a good primer link Zinc oxide. Its a good base for aluminum, but it might be a little pricey. Check out West Marine www.westmarine.com for info. They have great products.

CORRECTION--

Zinc Chromate is the correct name, not zinc oxide. Should be able to buy it in a spray can. Might want to do a google search for Zinc Chromate or you might want to check your local paint store.

Re: stripping aluminum...

ok new question. I have been stripping the boat for a few days now. I have got the outside pretty much done except for all the places where the paint does not come off. The inside is very difficult. I have got alot of paint that is not coming off. I am putting it on thick too. There is only like two coats on the boat. My question now is. Do I have to get every fregin bit off. Or can I just sand over everything including the paint that does not come off easy.

I am going to put duribak on the inside.

If things keep going this way. I might just sandblast the boat.

Re: stripping aluminum...

With and ALU boat you generaly can not remove any ALU as its already thin :)

Sandblasting will warp thin stuff and take off a lot of metal

Just scotch brite pads and a SS wire brush
