1980 merc 50 hp elec, long shaft, just bought it for 150.00, runs great but when connected to muffs, cold water sprays hard out of the tell tale but no water at all flowing out of the exhaust at lower unit/ prop.
Thanks

Is there water coming out of the gratings above the antiventialtion plate? The water must be exiting somewhere.

No, I pulled the hose off of the telll tale reducer at the cowl to check the flow, it pumps very hard and cold water, as if its not circulating through the block, the exhaust man. plate feels quite hot,'I was going to plug the telltLe hose and try to force the water to circulate and exit with the exhaust but
I'm not sure if it will damage anything
Thanks for the help

If the cooling passages are clear, that water is going somewhere..even with an iffy water pump impeller 40-50 PSI hose pressure should get all the way through the cooling system. You must have a blockage somewhere. In any event, you will wreck that powerhead if you keep running it with no water flowing thought the cooling jackets. I would take the gearcase off the leg and blow out the water tube with compressed air. That will circumvent the pump and let you know that the drive leg is clear. I'll have to defer to people with direct experience on that family of powerheads to tell you what plates, bolts, etc to remove up top to allow you better access to the upper passages. Good luck.

Plugging the telltale will not damage anything. The exhaust plate should be ice cold at idle speed, so the water flow to it is suspect. If I remmeber correctly, water from the cylinder head will flow into the exhaust plate, and then out the prop and gratings. Maybe the plug is at the top of the cylinder head, where it connects to the exhaust plate?

is that a fresh water motor? Boy I hope so, as the bolts on the cylinder head water jacket cover will come out of a freshwater motor, a whole lot easier.

[ABTTACH=CONFIG]207967[/ATTACH]Water spills over at the top of the block into the exhaust cover waterjacket. Pic is of I6 but the I4 should be the same. Just curious, where did you buy the motor and do you know where it had been stored. Maybe rodents used it as their storage cache.

I pulled theLU and connected a water hose to the water tube and plugged the tell tale hose, a small amount of water trickled out of the midsection but not much, then after about an hour the water started flowing at a fast rate from the mid section, I put it back together Nd its pumping strong, thanks for the help and ideas guys, I do have another question, I want to check my WOT rpm's but how and where do I connect the tac

A tachometer would need to be outboard specific. They are connected to the stator, specifically the grey tach signal wire connects to the yellow stator wire at the rectifier. (note your tach wire may be brown, instead)
