As the title states i'm dealing with an 60hp Evinrude that is giving me a headache. The motor dies out in neutral about a minute after starting. Sort of just fizzles out like its not getting enough fuel. Spark is fine and compressions is in spec. I've scoured the carbuerators with a fine tooth comb (ultrasonic cleaned) i've made sure float is in spec, the idle screw is at proper amount of turns. Confirmed reed valves are working (put hand on throat of carbs while idling, and no fuel spitback or pressure.) Entire fuel system has been replaced. (tank, fuel lines, filters, primer bulb, Converted VRO pump to pulse pump and premixed fuel.)

I manually pumped the primer bulb while idling to supplicate potential fuel pump issue but it did nothing.

With all this being done I think ok... maybe the engine isn't getting warm enough and the theromstat is possibly stuck open... Used a temperature gun on thermostat while idling, and this checks out as well.

I don't really know what else to do with the fuel system, so I think I may delve into the timing, and make sure its correct. (althought never done timing before so slightly apprehensive.)

Im on the precipice of just buying a new boat and or motor, so any pearls of wisdom or insights are welcome.

First post a model #----Is it a 1986 2 cylinder , 1988 3 cylinder, a 1995 model ??---All different motors.----Post compression test actual values too.----Check flywheel key.-----How did it run for you last season ?

E60TLEDR, 1996 3 cylinder. Compression: 130,130,128.

Ran great for me last season. I stow it in the desert, which I know can wear down plastics and varnish fuel if not winterized, but yeah I drained the fuel.

Idle mixture settings need to be done on a warm motor, under load in the water. They are adjusted for each carb individually. Initial setting is just to get her started and warmed up.

Also, If you have plastic carbs, the bowls can warp.

Good point, becaue of exhaust backpressure right? I did the adjustments under a slight load in the test tank but maybe I didn't reach proper rpm.

Plastic as in the bowls are plastic?

As in the carbs are entirely plastic. They exist on the 1996+ V4 and V6 models. Your carbs are different than the V4/6 carbs. Hopefully they are aluminum.

Oh dang, didn't know those existed. Yea, aside from the idle fuel circuit cover and float bowl its compeltely aluminum.

What is the float bowl made of? If plastic, check it with a straight edge for warpage.
