yer gonna like having the service manual... best tool in your toolbox....
here's where your flapper goes... the pic is looking down the exhaust pipe with the bellows between the riser and exhaust pipe removed....
IMG_2953-1.jpg

there's a flat bar (w/rubber flapper attached to it) that goes between the two brackets in the pic...
w/o rereading 'the' book. i believe you need to drill off the rivets to get the bracket off to replace the flapper bar into the bracket....
fyi. i'm a pretty much by the book guy. so i don't recommend what i'm about to say... however. in lew of drilling off the rivets, i bent the bar on the new flapper till i could get it into the slots of the brackets. then straightened the bar back out while in place in the brackets... use your own judgment.... my suggestion is to do it by the book.... once in a while though... ya can be a little inventive....

Update on the SS 204 MC 165. I removed the head and found the head/block/pistons all looked very good - head and block were dead flat. Previous work had obviously been done on the motor as there was no gasket to the thermostat housing (explains the rust stains down the front of the motor), and there was no thread seal on the head bolts - so they were well rusted, but I lucked into gettng them out without shearing any off. The saga continues...
