All new type c gear oil. took it to lake and it ran fine and shifted fine for about one hour. went into a cove and turned boat off. when I started it, it was stuck in forward, when I shifted it into reverse it still was in forward. will not go into reverse or neturel. when I got home I unhooked the linkage and manually tried to put it into reverse and it will not go. the shift rod will move by hand up and down but stays in forward gear. Help.

Re: STUCK IN FORWARD. 1977 johnson 115

The vertical shift rod leading from the powerhead to the lower unit is hooked into a vertical manual Shift Assist setup that is actuated by a oil pump at the forward end of the propshaft.

For that vertical shift rod to move its proper shift length up and down and have the lower unit stay in forward gear, either that Shift Assist assembly would have to fall apart (unlikely), or the plunger that attaches between the oil pump and the shifter dog somehow failed (more likely).

At any rate, the lower unit will need to be removed and dismantled as needed to cure the problem.

You'll need to drop the lower unit and take a look. Sounds like the shift rod connector has loosened up on ya somehow and allowed the rods to separate or, if it's an electric shift model, you may have a bad selenoid. Either way, the lower unit has to come off to see what it is.

Unless the seals (any of them) have been leaking, reuse the present seals. However, DO replace the O Rings and use Bombardier 3M Product #847 sealer on them.

"O"Rings on the:
4 - Carrier retaining screws.
1 - Large Carrier assy.
1 - Seal & Bearing housing under the water pump.
