MR leg,
Well we re did the water pump in the drive, put it back together as per the book, it will go into forward gear but not into reverse.
(If we do this when it is runnig as thats how we found out, the motor stalls)
Quick question, did you have the outdrive off or did you just drop the gearcase?
Will the shifter control lever move freely forward to reverse, or does it jam? Will it go into neutral? Should be able to figure this out.
One more Q, please don't be offended:redface: are you sure you are in forward? The prop should spin freely clockwise and lock when you turn it counterclockwise when it is in forward.
OK, so it seems as the top washer that goes over the shifter shaft was put upside down.
The washer was supposed to be put on concave up not concave down.
Putting it on upside down bound up the shafts rotation.

Hmmmm..... the washer is supposed to be flat, better get a new washer, or it could let the intermediate shift shaft drop down low enough to disconnect from the upper shift shaft. Here it is: http://www.mercruiserparts.com/showSpecialPicture.asp?pn=29395
