Stuck in reverse

I have bought a '77 Thunderbolt 850 and she was stuck in reverse long ago, has anybody fixed this type of problem? Can the gear case be removed(while stuck in rev) without causeing further damage? Cables work fine...

Sure you can take it off in that condition with NP.
