i took the foot off my 87' 25hp evinrude and now it is stuck in reverse. It wont go into neutral and when the throttle is applied forward the motor goes backwards. pulling the throttle to the normal reverse is very tough. i can see that the shift rod is not going down as far as it should but i dont know why. It needs to drop about a 1/4" further than its going right now.

Re: stuck in reverse!! 1987 25hp evinrude

9 views and no clues? thats ok i figured it out. here is wut happened for others to reference. This is for a 1987 25HP electric start Evinrude.

Ill start by saying if you are changing ur lower unit oil DO NOT remove the philips head bolt! only remove the flat head one. The philips bold acts as a pivot pin for the clutch system. once its removed everything inside pretty much falls apart. If you think this may be the problem then u can try one thing that u may get lucky with. Leave the phillips bolt out, you probably can't get it back in there anyway because the pivot arm dropped as soon as it was removed and now the hole isn't lined up. Put the throttle all the way forward and get motor as horizontal as possible while keeping it straight, not steering right or left. once in this position giggle the whole motor then put the throttle in reverse. Now use a small pic (bike spoke or smaller) in the philips bolt hole to move the plate around and find the hole the philips bolt needs to go through. Just realigning the hole to begin with is not enough! The linkage must all be intact. Then try shifting to see all is smooth. If so then start the motor and test it out.

If this doesn't work then u will have to remove the prop and bearing carrier plush the C clip to access the linkage. Make sure u have the motor trimmed up or else all the gear lube will come poring out. Once u have done that then u will be able to see the linkage hook below the prop shaft. Move the shift rod with ur hand or have someone else shift it while u watch it move and see how it works. Then... fix it!

Did you install the shift rod retainer properly? Shift rod may be out of adjustment.
