My 97 johnson 35 hp seems to be in slow mode. I bought this motor used a week ago knowing something was wrong with it. spits water just fine doesnt overheat, but when i turn the key the warning alarm sounds. it doesnt stop until i turn the key off.I thought these alarms only sound if the motor reaches a certain temp but this one sounds when the key is in the on position and not running. please help

Re: Stuck in SLOW mode

Disconnect all the alarm leads one at a time and see if any of them make the alarm quit. If none make it quit then its probably the buzzer itself. Is it in the control box. If so you will have to take the box apart to get to it.

Re: Stuck in SLOW mode

the other thing is the motor goes only one speed and thats a little faster than idle. when i give it full throttle it takes off like its going to run good , then it just slows way down and continues at tha one speed what could be causing this

Mine did the same thing when it overheated once,I had to drive around,at slow speed, for 1 hour for it to reset itself then it was fine.

weather its warm or cold it still runs in one speed. it should reset itself after it cools but it doesnt. could the ignition module be bad?

Did you find out where the alarm is coming from yet??<br />If it was my motor I'd tear the carb/carbs down and give them a good soaking in carb cleaner and blow them out with compressed air. Make sure all the jets, passageways and orifices are sparkling clean. Then rebuid the carb with a new carb kit. I'd also replace the waterpump since it's a new motor tp you.

I had the same problem. It was one of the temperature switches on my cylinder heads. If you haven't already, test it/them by disconnecting the bullet connectors and then starting engine.

Re: Stuck in SLOW mode

There were problems with the system check (tach with gauges) units, I had a 98 that did the same thing, when you turned on the key the alarm would sound and stay on. The dealer (a friend of mine) said there were many problems with them, his dad went through 3 units before they got one to work for an extended period of time. The one on my boat now doesn't work correctly either.
