Stuck lower unit!

I was looking to replace the impeller, followed the manual instructions for removing the lower unit. Removed two bolts per side, a nut, and disconnected the lower shift rod screw to no avail. It's stuck, any suggestions? There looked to be some corrosion around the stud toward the front of the foot, so I put some penetrating oil to work on it. Please help! PS Forgot to add, this is a 1977 35hp Evinrude.

In addition to the shift linkage, there's a total of seven (7) bolts and nuts that have to be removed. Did ya get all of 'em?

c/6
Hooty

Seven? I counted 4 bolts and one nut. Where are the other hiding?

Re: Stuck lower unit!

Looking at your photo JHar and I see places for two bolts (presumably there are two on the other side too?) and the stud at the front, that makes 5 total, are you thinking of a different model perhaps Hooty?
My lower unit took a bit of shifting too, but there's not much to hold it once all those nuts and bolts are off. Try some penetrating oil and leave it for a while, then if it still won't budge a few sharp taps with a soft hammer or wooden mallet may do it.
Failing that a hardwood (not metal) wedge tapped into the join should start it moving. I wonder if it's been reassembled sometime using sealant?

That's a good question about the sealant, after the penetrating oil had set awhile I used a dental pick to remove some of the material at the base of the stud. It didn't seem like corrosion but it's tough to tell.

Those 35 HP´s has no trim tap, thats why there is only 4 bolts, and one nut. It has 4 bolts and one nut in front. If there is corrosion around the stud, Put some suitable material above the stud and turn the nut up above the end of threads. This will force the stud down thru alloy. If driveshat is stuck, post again, I'v got a little trick suitable for the 35's

You can also start by tapping on top of nut in front, just turn it up, flush with stud.
