While waiting to use the ramp we were entertained watching this ramp tale unfold. The tow vehicle was a 2wd small truck, the ramp was broken up and the boat was a 20' inboard ski boat. Once the boat was loaded, the truck could not pull the trailer out of the water. At this point, the guy in the boat decides to help the truck move by starting the boat and putting it in gear. Pretty innovative and I was thinking...... this might just work. Well, just then the guy in the boat guns it and the boat jumps the winch post and slams into the back of the pickup truck tailgate. Lottsa damage.
Aren't launch ramps entertaining?

When life gets really boring (and the boat is in the shop) just take a lawn chair and a picnic lunch down to the local ramp and watch the fun! :D :D

My Dad never did the powerload option, but in 1980, he decided to 'downsize' from a half to Chevy to a Totota with a 5 speed.

Needless to say, he could launch his 19 ft trihull, but he couldnt get it out. He was at a fairly secluded ramp and had to wait for a couple of hours for someone to pull his boat out.

it works great on shaft drive ski boats seen it done many times BUT they usally hook the bow in place first and only give it enough gas to get the rig rolling ;)

tommays

Re: Stuck on the ramp

Ouch! Gotta love ski boats! On Saturday, the boys and I came into the ramp to retrieve. Dropped the boys off at the jetty, eldest backs down on the left side of two lane ramp, I idle the boat into the v-jaws on trailer, youngest boy strolls down walkway on trailer and clips on, then middle boy winches. All over in two minutes or so. Pull out, and park to secure boat. Not one of use got remotely wet.
Watch as a 4wd crewcab backs a gigantic orange-coloured wobble roller trailer in and he keeps on keeping on. When trailer is completely submerged an orange ski boat thunders into sight, its air exhausts bellowing. He chops the throttle, lines up and flies onto the trailer still doing about 6 or so knots. Driver throws boat into reverse, guns it for a second and stops the boat dead, smack in the middle of the trailer. Gets clipped on, so far, this is very impressive.
Only trouble is that because the trailer is so deep into the water, because the stringers on the hull don't keep the boat in place on the rollers and although clipped on, the tide drifts the boat slightly to one side and when pulled out, the beast is sitting at an angle with the starboard chine perilously close to the trailer mudguard. So boat gets pushed back in, refloated and all three participants get wet lining up the boat and winching her on. Water temp in the middle of winter here is 12 degrees... tee hee!

Re: Stuck on the ramp

Saw something similar last year at a public launch. A young woman showing off with a jetski on a trailer that had just backed into the water. Kept revving the motor and making lots of unneccessary noise and being and general PITA. Lots of people around and a restaurant with outdoor patio right beside ramp. Suddenly the jetski launches forward and slams into the tailgate of the tow vehicle. Driver lands in the box of the pickup, luckily unhurt except for their pride. Lots of applause and cheers from the crowd as they quickly trailered the craft and left the ramp. Where is my camera when I need it ?

It gets crazier as the season winds down. Saw a truck begin to pull the boat and trailer out at the ramp, Vrooom, truck move gracefully forward, trailer does not. Slam slip, trailer with boat on board rolls into the drink. Then the guy yells at his wife!. Never checked the hitch. Duh!

Re: Stuck on the ramp

Couple years ago here a guy loaded with no trouble. As he pulled away with his chevy s10 2 wheel drive the tires would not grab. After he sat and spun for 20 seconds or so, several people decided to help. About 4 guys got on his rear bumper as he was spinning. The added weight gave him traction and away he went and went and went. It was about 200 yards down the road before the drunk moron realized the people were on his bumper.
