Stuck Prop cone on 280 outdrive . . .

OK, so I'm trying to remove the prop on my 280 outdrive and I can't get the prop cone to come off. Does anybody know if it is right hand or left hand threads? If the outdrive is already removed from the boat, how do I hold the prop still while I try to remove the cone? I don't want to ruin anything.

If I do have to cut the cone off, how big of diameter is the prop shaft so I know how deeply I can cut into the cone? I'm an old fabrication guy so I feel good about the prospect of cutting the cone off in the same way a nut splitter would work.

Sorry for the newb questions but I'm new to Volvo out drives.

Re: Stuck Prop cone on 280 outdrive . . .

First off, the prop cone on a 280 drive is secured in place (in addition to the torque on the prop cone itself) by either a long bolt that goes into the end of the prop cone -or- by a metal lock washer that has tabs on it which bend upward into indentations in either the base of the prop cone or a spacer under the prop cone. Check on the presence of either of those things.

The threads on the prop cone are standard so to loosen it you would apply counter-clockwise torque. Put something strong thru the hole (e.g. a short length of steel rod or a thick screwdriver) thru the prop cone and use it as your reverse torquing device. Try a little heat and see if that helps. Not sure how you could hold the prop with the outdrive removed...I've never run into that situation, but I would think that anything can be used to hold it in place, just be careful that you don't bend a blade on the prop if you care about it. I would guess that the prop shaft is about 1" in diameter, but that's just a guess so go conservative if you decide to cut the cone off.

Good luck.

Thanks am_dew, it is the newer drive with the bolt through the end and I've already removed that. I think it may have been a while since the last owner changed the prop so I may be dealing with a little galvanic corrosion as he did run it on the ocean some times. I'll try the heat and see what happens.

As for "holding the prop", a piece of 2x4 is standard equipment for just that purpose. Stays in the boat all the time.
Put the piece in between a blade and the actual outdrive. And as am_dev says, be careful not to bend a blade.
