Just pulled out my 1987 SeaRay Seville 17' 3.0 out for the summer and the steering is stuck! At one try I put some muscle into the wheel and got the lower unit to move... but now it's stuck again. I'm new to the I/O game and am also a broke college kid so I'd like to be able to fix this myself. Any tricks to figure out what the issue is? Thanks alot in advance!

Re: Stuck Steering

You don't say what kind of drive it is.

Disconnect the steering cable push/pull arm from the I/O and that will tell you if it's the drive or more likely the cable.

Welcome to iboats.......
Look in the back near the transom, you will see the cable end.....
Get some Kroil (not WD 40) & start spraying.....
The tube gets corroded sometimes....
Sounds like you need to do some preventative maintenence.......JK

Re: Stuck Steering

Well you can use WD 40, & it might free it up but it really is not a true lubricant, like kroil or PBlaster....JK

Re: Stuck Steering

I forgot. Depending on the make and model there may be a grease fitting on the rear steering assembly.

I use to think the same way about WD40 until I read the history on it. Quite impressive
WD stands for water displacement and the 40 stands for the number of trys it took to come up wiht the right recipe. It was made for the military missile program. GOOD STUFF
Beef :D

Re: Stuck Steering

Spray wd 40 in a lock and see how long in works. For some things it's great. For others, it'd terrible. It's parafin based. WAX. That's way it's bad news for locks. The parafin hardins and tumblers stick.
But, back to the steering problem. MOST sealed steering sysyems do not have grease fittings. Disconnect the cable at the engine and turn the wheel, if it's stiff, replace the cable.
