1991 150 Fast Strike - I got the foot off to replace the water pump. Pulled off the pump housing, but the rubber impeller won't come off. Been squirting wd40 around the shavt but still won't budge.
Any suggestion?
Thanks

The impeller has a metal hub. So if stuck it is not the rubber holding it on. If you cut it do not cut the key or the keyway.

It is jammed on the plastic wedge perhaps.----Use a wood dowel and hammer and see if you can bump it in both direction to loosen it.

In the past month I had this same situation on two motors--a 1990 4hp Evinrude and a 1998 8hp Evinrude. It was a little bit different because on both motors (admittedly much smaller than your 150hp) the rubber portion of the impeller had completely separated rom the brass/bronze hexagonal centerpiece of the impeller. You will have to cut the rubber away. Interestingly enough, water flow from both of these motors seemed to be OK--no overheating and good telltale flow. And both of these motors have the plastic key/wedge (vs. the older round steel pin key). The solution on both was the same: I used a hot air gun (didn't even need a torch) to expand the brass/bronze hex centerpiece after soaking with lubricant for a day or so. Then I clamped a Visegrip onto the brass/bronze and hammered upward on the Visegrip. This partially melted one of the keys/wedges but no worries as new impellers include (or should include) a new key/wedge.

Photo is the 8hp impeller. I could see daylight between the metal hub and the rubber. I am certain the rubber was at least occasionally slipping around the hub. A good lesson to as to why the impeller should be changed every year or two. Changeout also assures all the bolts that secure Lower Unit get removed/cleaned and resealed or re-antiseized before they are too far gone. Just as importantly 20210316_195314.jpgthis annual/biannual changeout prevents the Driveshaft from seizing to Crankshaft.
I did try removing these 2 seized impellers with a brief (couple hours) lubricant soak and Visegrips. This didn't work. It was only after soaking a couple days and then using the heat gun did i have success. I hope this helps...
