I have a '98 Ford Explorer Sport (2 Door, 6 Cly.)
I've had it for about 7 years. It's the first vehicle I've ever owned with any of the following: Automatic Transmission, Electric Windows, Electric Seats, Keyless Entry, Cruise Control. I thought I'd bought a Cadillac when I first got it.
I keep the oil changed and it still runs pretty well. No complaints on the engine at all really (knock on wood).
The list of stuff that doesn't work on it just keeps growing. Here we go in order of failure.
1. Rear wiper. Must be some weird design flaw. As the wiper begins its arc across the glass it also lifts off the glass only to make contact just before the end of the arc. So it never effectively touches the glass. And that is when it moves at all. Sometimes it just doesn't do anything. I took it to the dealer and Skeeter/Bubber just bent it a little and said "air ya go". No improvement.
2. Stereo display, or lack thereof. It comes on about twice a year and stays on until I turn the engine off. I take advantage of that time to update my presets and set the clock.
3. Seat recline handles. They both rusted and broke off. No salty environment here. wth?
4. Cigarette Lighter. Fuse is good. Replaced lighter. cleaned out the socket. Still doesn't work.
5. Driver's side door lock. Usually won't unlock unless i slip a fine point needle nose pliers under the door handle while actuating the electronic door lock. I crawled across from the passenger side for about a month until I figured that trick out.
6. Mysterious freon leak. I added 2 cans last summer. Cooled like a champ for about a week.
7. Drivers side window washer. Nothing comes out. Passenger side of the windshield gets a good squirt though. Maybe I should just drive from that side so I won't have to climb over.
8. Heater is always on. Turn the knob to red or blue side. Doesn't matter, blows hot air.
9. Drivers side brake light. I buy bulbs in gross and have replaced the factory phillips screws that hold the light in with t-handle speed screws. Not a problem anymore.
10. Hood lift springs. They won't hold the hood up anymore. I have a piece of 2" pvc pipe wedged in between the battery and fender that I pull out to prop it up.
Stay tuned. More to come I'm sure.
