stumped????

i have a 72 115 mercury outboard. it starts great and runs good. When i shut it off for about 5 mins. or troll around at idol, give it gas it stalls. any ideas out there?

Sounds lean, could be the fuel pump - check by pumping the primer bulb, if that solves the problem it's the fuel pump but it's more likely to just be idle adjustment.

Do you think it could be the primer ball is not working right. It only does it when it is warmed up. It does correct itself if I throttle it up a little. Any chance someone might know how many rpm this should max out at and how fast it should be pushing a 78 17ft baja

A couple of things you might check.

While it is 'stalling', bump the choke, does it make it better, or worse?

If better, then the carbs may be to lean on the idle mixture adjustment or possibly the float levels are a bit too low.

If worse, then the idle could be too fat, or the floats a bit too high.

Have you choked for a leaking float valve?

Trim the engine level, and while it is turned OFF, look down the carb throats while you pump and hold pressure on the primer bulb. Do you see ANY fuel leaking into any carb? If so then it is time to clean all carbs and replace the needle/seats.

When it has stalled out, have you pulled all the spark plugs and inspected them to see if they are wet/dry/sooted up?

Probably not the primer bulb from your description but a bad fuel pump at iudle will drop the fuel level in the float bowl causing a lean condition at idle and startup. Check with CharlieB, to may cooks spoil the broth as do to many talkers, I'm out of here.

quick question new to this and dont want to make people mad am i posting this question in the right spot if i go to forums it wont let me post anything. by the way think one of the maybe head bolt was dripping gas around it tightened think it may be running better. rain wont stop in ohio. thanks for your help and sorry if its in the wrong spot will figure out eventually
