I have a 1964 40 hp big twin. I have tuned the igniton system and am getting fire. I have rebuilt the carb. Still cant get it to start. It turns over like wildfire but will not start. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: stumped

Three things she needs: compression, spark, fuel. If she gets all three she runs; if she don't, she don't.

You only mentioned two......

Um shouldn't that be four things?....timing? it can have spark, and compression and fuel, but if that spark is at the wrong time, its not gona run.....

Re: stumped

Timing is a big part of it and will affect the way it runs, but it still will start with the time a little out of whack, otherwise how would you adjust the timing to the right degree if it won't turn on since it has to be done while running??
Mine on my Johnson was all out of whack and definitely affected it when I throttled up but it still cranked beautifully just needed to do a timing adjustment before it ran perfect at WOT

Re: stumped

On a 1964 40 HP, if you set the points at .020 the timing is set. You do have to set the throttle linkage for proper pick-up with stator plate.

four is too many to remember.

it takes way more keystrokes to type "equal (or nearly equal) compression across all cylinders, spark at the right time, and fuel mixed with air in the correct ratio."

dang, now my fingers are all tired out.........

Ok guys thanks for all your help. It is now running but definitly needs some tuning. What is the proper way to set the throttle linkage. Thanks again for all your help.

Re: stumped

Search on Link and Sync. You need to have the throttle plate start to open when the roller cam hits the mark on the bottom of the ignition plate.

BTW, how'd you get it running? What was the problem?
